Hollow eyes

The fragile, delicate skin around our eyes can sometimes appear dark, sunken, and hollow. In most cases, hollow eyes are the result of aging, but also indicative of dehydration, a lack of sleep, or eyelid surgery that was too aggressive.

Hollows can be characterized as follows:

  • Hollow under the eyes and/or dark circles
  • A dark shadow on the lower and upper eyelids
  • Generally tired-looking eyes
  • Eyes that seem sunken in their orbits

Our eyes are one of the first things to suffer from the passage of time. The skin around the eyes is extremely delicate, fragile, and very fine. It is under a lot of strain due to the movements of our eyelids and the muscles around the eyes resulting in a sunken appearance, with a darker color than the rest of the face.

Hollow eyes are generally a combination of factors, including aging of the face and concomitant fat loss. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and gives the skin its strength and suppleness. As the body ages, it tends to lose collagen and produce less and less. The first place where the loss of collagen is the most visible is the skin around the eye contour, giving the impression that the eyes are sunken in their orbits.

Other factors include:

  • Dehydration
  • Quality of diet and lifestyle
  • Nutritional deficiencies can also be a cause
  • Smoking
  • Lack of sleep
  • Genetics (your eyes may be naturally hollow)
  • Considerable weight loss
  • A blepharoplasty that was too aggressive

Generally speaking, most people begin noticing that their eye sockets seem darker and more sunken at around the age of 40.
