Puberty is a period when the personality is not yet developed and is generally associated with a quest for identity. Sometimes young people desperately want to change their appearance and this may cause major psychological repercussions. It is important for parents to be vigilant and to listen to their suffering children. Nevertheless, this does not mean everything should be accepted. Too often, some TV shows make teenagers want to consult a plastic surgeon.

The plastic surgeon needs to take care to understand the real motivations of these teenagers who are concerned about their image. In some cases, the teenager may suffer from a dysmorphic syndrome -distortion of his/her body image- and psychological counseling may be necessary.

Finally, it’s important to remember that even though theses surgeries aim at enhancing the appearance and aesthetics, they are still surgical procedures that carry potential risks.
