Swelling of the breast tissue in men is called gynecomastia: the swollen breast gland tissue gives a feminine appearance to the male chest.
Gynecomastia commonly appears during puberty, but it can become aggravated, or be triggered later, especially after the use of anabolic steroids for body building.
It never disappears spontaneously.
The condition can create difficulties in dressing and embarrassment, when it shows, during sport sessions, at the seaside, or even in personal life relationships.
A medical check-up with hormonal and radiological analysis is usually performed before all surgery. In the case of hormonal imbalance, drugs will be prescribed and no surgery will be necessary. In addition, a mammography and an ultrasound exam are always required.
It is important to note that in general, a pubertal gynecomastia affecting both breasts is not a serious problem. However, a gynecomastia affecting only one breast and appearing during adulthood always calls for an emergency radiological exam.
The surgery takes between 1 and 2 hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia ina day care hospital. Patients are usually dismissed the same day.
When the breast enlargement is due solely to excessive fat tissue, adipomasty, an isolated liposuction will solve the problem. However, in case of true gynecomastia, excess growth of breast tissue, a discreet incision is necessary. A pressure garment called a bolero and purchased before the surgery will be placed at the end of the procedure.
Health insurance may cover the fees in part if gynecomastia is painful, asymmetrical, or affects the psychological condition of the patient.
After the procedure
The surgery is usually painless.
The first shower is permitted the day after the surgery. There is no bandage to make, but a pressure garment must be worn day and night for a period of 1 month in order to limit the edema. As in all liposuction treatments, lymphatic drainage sessions are recommended to facilitate the absorption of edema. Exercises and sports must be avoided for 15 days after surgery.
The chest will reach its final aspect within 3 to 6 months after surgery.
The first shower is permitted the day after the surgery but baths should be avoided during the first month. The scars need to be protected from the sun for a period of one(1)year after the surgery in each and every case!
