Breast reconstruction surgery
Breast reconstruction always consists of several steps, whether it is intended to treat breast abnormalities such as tuberous breast or Poland anomaly, or if the abnormality is the consequence of breast cancer. These steps permit the achievement of 2 breasts with volumes and appearances as symmetrical as possible.
Breast reconstruction does not aim to reconstruct the breast as it was at a particular time, which may be impossible, but to create 2 similar breasts. This may imply an intervention on the other breast in order to lift it up (breast ptosis), to reduce it (unilateral breast reduction) or to increase its volume (implant).
Breast reconstruction techniques
Different techniques can be used for breast reconstruction:
Breast Reconstruction with Implants
What is breast reconstruction with an implant? This simple technique aims to reconstruct a breast following a mastectomy to treat breast cancer. Dr Natalie Rajao uses a breast implant during the procedure. Discover all you need to know about this breast surgery.
Breast reconstruction with the DIEP technique
This reconstruction is performed by taking skin and fat from the abdomen. A DIEP is possible when the quality of the chest skin does not enable the insertion of an implant alone, that the morphology of the abdomen is suitable (« small tummy »), and when the patient is a non-smoker.
