Puberty is a period when the personality is not yet developed and is generally associated with a quest for identity. Sometimes young people desperately want to change their appearance and this may cause major psychological repercussions. It is important for parents to be vigilant and to listen to their suffering children. Nevertheless, this does not mean everything should be accepted. Too often, some TV shows make teenagers want to consult a plastic surgeon.
Treatments teenagers ask most frequently are:
- Breast surgery (breast reduction, breast augmentation or reconstruction of breast deformities such as tuberous breasts).
- Correction of gynecomastia for boys
The plastic surgeon needs to take care to understand the real motivations of these teenagers who are concerned about their image. In some cases, the teenager may suffer from a dysmorphic syndrome -distortion of his/her body image- and psychological counseling may be necessary.
Some treatments such as those for prominent ears, gynecomastia, breast deformities and others, may be covered in part by health insurance.
Finally, it’s important to remember that even though theses surgeries aim at enhancing the appearance and aesthetics, they are still surgical procedures that carry potential risks.
The agreement of the mother and the father is mandatory for minors.
THE LIFE OF A TEENAGER MAY BE TRANSFORMED BY A SURGICAL TREATMENT! PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK FOR ADVICE.
