Calf surgery

Calf augmentation aims to reshape the leg and can be carried out using implants in a unilateral or bilateral way. It represents the best-suited and safest procedure to treat calf hypotrophy. Lipofilling has been known to increase the risk of thrombo-embolic accidents and the results could be disappointing if there is a bad integration of the graft of injected fat.

  • Patients need to stop smoking before the surgery and oral contraception should be stopped 1 month before.
  • The surgery is carried out under general anesthesia and lasts about 1 to 2 hours. The implant is placed under the membrane of the triceps sural muscle and the scar is situated in the knee crease. There is no drain.
  • After surgery, compression stockings should be worn for 10 days following surgery and a preventive anti-coagulation treatment is prescribed for 10 days as well.

Powerful pain-killers can be used during the 48 hours following surgery. 3 cm (1.2-inch) heels should be worn when walking for a few days in order to reduce the tension of the triceps in the calf.
Usual activities can be resumed 3 weeks after surgery and patients can go back to sports progressively after 8 weeks.
Calf implants offer stable and harmonious results which will be evident around 3 months after the surgery.
